Online Managing Editor

To research, write, edit and upload with images news items to Engineering & Technology (E and T) online to the highest editorial standards.

Accountable to: Director of Publishing

Hours: 35 hours per week, plus as many as required to fulfil the needs of the post

Salary: Band C

Location: London

Main Duties and Responsibilities (not necessarily in priority order)

  • To quickly research write, and edit or otherwise prepare for publication news articles on a daily basis to the E&T web site;
  • To help to ensure a regular, coherent, excellent and fast news service through the E&T web site;
  • To find exclusive stories and follow them up for publication;
  • To provide other editorial articles for publication in the E&T magazine or its web site when required;
  • To assist in soliciting content for E&T;
  • To take editorial responsibility for covering particular sectors or running stories as required by the line manager or Editor-in-Chief;
  • To manage the E&T Daily e-mail newsletter and E&T News fortnightly e-mail newsletter processes on a shared rota basis;
  • To update Twitter, Facebook and other social media as appropriate with E&T content and activity;
  • To compile World View every month for E&T magazine;
  • To upload news stories from each new issue of E&T magazine to the website;
  • To undertake travel to events for reporting purposes where necessary;
  • To work with designers, picture editor, news and features editors and other colleagues to source appropriate illustrative material for the E&T web site;
  • To assist in updating areas of the E&T website whenever required to keep it fresh and making the most of the material available through the magazine and its web site;
  • To help ensure adherence to E&T’s values, pillars, style guide and templates;
  • To assist in other editorial and production processes where required;
  • To contribute to E&T video reports and the E&T podcast, when opportunities or ideas arise;
  • Other editorial work as needed;
  • To undertake any other reasonable duties and projects as requested by the line manager;
  • To comply with data protection legislation and act responsibly on matters of data disclosure both internally and to third parties;
  • To be familiar with the Health and Safety and Fire policies for the company and to attend mandatory updates where required.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Excellent journalism skills in research, writing and editing;
  • Education to degree level;
  • Ability to understand complex material and to produce clear and accurate English, to the highest editorial standards, with meticulous attention to detail;
  • Use of industry-standard editorial techniques and conventions;
  • Knowledge of online news provision and other aspects of online media;
  • Experience of word processing and DTP packages, graphics formats and e-mail;
  • Two years experience of journalism;
  • Familiarity with the use of social media to promote news.

Desirable

  • Demonstration of good news sense and ability to identify news stories;
  • Reporting experience on trade or business publication, preferably a weekly newspaper or website;
  • Portfolio of news and features stories;
  • Ability to understand picture formats and know where to source appropriate photographs to illustrate stories;
  • Shorthand.
