To develop and deliver communications strategy for the IET.
To lead on and manage communications for; IET externally, IET internally, IET corporately, and IET’s products and services.

Reports to: Director of Governance and Policy

Accountable to: Director of Governance and Policy

Hours: 35 hours per week, exclusive of meal breaks, plus as many as required to fulfill the needs of the post

Band: PC       

Location: Michael Faraday House, Stevenage

Main Duties and Responsibilities (not necessarily in priority order):

  • To build and maintain IET’s reputation and influence with key external stakeholders concerned with our areas of interest and activity;
  • To enhance stakeholder awareness and understanding of the IET as a leading objective, independent, authoritative and trusted voice and source of information on issues  relating to engineering and technology;
  • Develop and implement an integrated communications strategy and activity plan for the Organisation;
  • Provide communications advice, support and training for the President, Chief Executive and other  senior staff and volunteers e.g. via speech writing and handling the media;
  • To work closely with the Policy Department, Sectors, the Head of Marketing and others on major corporate initiatives;
  • Work with the Policy Department, Sectors and external consultants to ensure a joined up approach to public affairs;
  • To provide effective leadership, management and development of a the IET communications team and Social Media Panel;
  • Develop and deliver stakeholder communications plans;
  • To develop key, enduring, consistent messages about what the IET represents and its activities;
  • Champion consistency across all communications within the organisation ensuring that all communications are compliant with the house style;
  • To act as a spokesperson for the IET;
  • To represent the IET on key industry communications bodies;
  • To build a strong working relationship with key media channels;
  • To manage overall communications budget to agreed limit;
  • Provide leadership on media crisis management as required;
  • Develop proactive and reactive PR plans to raise the profile of the organisations activities;
  • Develop an annual communications calendar linked to key events and integrated multimedia campaigns;
  • Champion the evaluation of communications activity;
  • To undertake any other duties and projects at the request of the line manager;
  • To comply with data protection legislation and act responsibly on matters of data disclosure both internally and to third parties;
  • To be familiar with the Health and Safety and Fire policies for the organisation and to attend mandatory updates where required.

Person Specification:

Essential Criteria

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to successfully  communicate a range of technical information, to a wide range of audiences
  • A specialist background in communications and considerable experience of working with the national media
  • Demonstrable experience of Communications / PR / Media Relations planning and strategy development
  • Experience of public policy and public affairs work
  • Significant experience of stakeholder management including targeting and messaging
  • Experience of working with senior staff and volunteers e.g. Chief Executive and President
  • Excellent interpersonal and people management skills, with the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy to achieve goals
  • Awareness and understanding of the need for great attention to detail and exacting standards required within a communications team
  • Experience of leading, managing and developing a team of communication specialists
  • Demonstrable budget management experience
  • Ability to manage change and risk to ensure delivery of objectives within financial and other constraints
  • Skilled at building confidence and effective working relationships with staff and volunteers at all levels and at using a co-operative and open working style to build trust and to support colleagues
  • Experience of developing, managing and sustaining professional relationships with external agencies and suppliers
  • Creative and structured thinking ability
  • Strong process and project management skills and experience
  • Excellent influencing and leadership skills
