James Howe - Technical & Professional Network Manager, MFH, Stevenage

Before joining the IET in 2004, I graduated with a BSc in Business Economics from Leicester University and then embarked on an amazing year travelling round Australia and New Zealand. I returned to the UK with no money and requiring work. I signed-up with an employment agency and originally joined the IET as a temporary member of staff.

I had no idea who the IET were or what they did, so I simply came along out of necessity. However, I found a vibrant and dynamic organisation with an international mix of friendly and sociable people. My role was interesting and varied – I can honestly say every day was different. Therefore, when I was offered a permanent position I was very keen to say yes.

I work in the Technical & Professional Networks Department (TPN) and was promoted to my current position in March 2006. The TPNs each look after one of the IET’s special interest groups covering a specific aspect of engineering, e.g. power, communications or IT, providing specialist services and networking opportunities for engineering managers either virtually via our on-line activities or through conferences and events.

I am in a position with a clearly defined career path and excellent opportunities for progression, supported by outstanding training. The IET offers excellent benefits and the office is active, lively and easily accessible
