He states: "I received tremendous support from Caterpillar throughout the MSc and CEng registration process. The Education Assistance Programme and the ability to work on challenging projects, coupled with continued support and guidance from my workplace mentor, Dermot Murphy, enabled me to make CEng a reality." Mike Hope of Kingston University emphasises the flexibility of the programme: "Ian is an excellent example of how useful this approach to gaining an MSc and then CEng can be.
I have two degrees from the OU (BSc Hons and MEng) and I qualified for CEng via the (then) IEE in 2000.

I moved to Australia in 2004 and have been working in NSW for most of the time, then relatively recently moving to QLD.

I thought that it was time to submit my qualifications for appraisal to achieve RPEQ - Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland - via Engineers Australia. The result of the application was that I was told that my degrees were not recognised as they did not appear on the Engineering Council list of accredited degrees and as such, the application was rejected.

The IEE assessed my qualifications and deemed them to be applicable for CEng, as I had closely followed the IEE subject profile but my achievement of CEng seems to count for very little in Australia (or QLD at least) apparently, due to this aspect. Without the Engineering Council listing showing my degrees on the list, I have to take an alternative course of action to gain RPEQ whereby I am treated like a graduate engineer again.

So, to my mind, there appears to be a couple of issues:

1. The Mutual Recognition Agreement between the IET and EA does not simply look at prior 'status' and transfer across to RPEQ. There seems to be an additional evaluation of academic qualifications. Surely, if the IEE/IET deemed the qualification as worthy and therefore awarded CEng, this should be sufficient?

2. OU degrees can be wide and varied as regards their content, so I can understand the EC being reticent to list them all to do so with all permutations would be too onerous. But surely they can show generic types and state that they are based on a specified IEE/IET course profile?

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for broaching this aspect - my apologies if not.

Hi guys I'm not really sure how this all works but I am interested in the IEng/CEng professional designations as part of my continuing professional development.

I will give you my background first: I did a Computing degree which I finished in 2010, in early 2011 which I started a small IT consultancy abroad to gain some commercial experience. In January this year I started a graduate scheme in the Commercial side of a large Manufacturing/Electrical Engineering company while studying a part time MSc in Technology Management online. My role and future roles will expose me to areas of marketing, product management, business development, new product development. So really I just want some guidance in how the process works and where to get started. I have read many documents here on the IET website as well as the Engineering Council. Here are my questions if anyone is willing to help.

1) My hons degree and MSc aren't accredited by the IET, is this going to be a big problem?
2) Is it worth pursuing the IEng designation first and later the CEng? In your opinions will my areas of work allow me to fulfill the competencies needed for the designations (anyone work in the commercial side of engineering that is an IEng/CEng?), I understand if this question is hard to answer.
3) Do I start the process now or when I feel I have enough experience. I think it has been suggested elsewhere on the forum, that it is a good idea to join the IET now and keeping a record of my experiences and how they meet the competencies detailed in UK-SPEC. If this is the way to go I assume I need to join as an associate?

Thanks for any help provided, I am new to all this so I appreciate any guidance here.

Hi,

I am seeking some guidance, I have attempted correspondence with an advisor to no avail but am hoping someone may be able to assist me.

I am ultimately seeking Ceng registration.

As for qualifications and experience;

I have worked in the engineering department of a train operating company since 2003. In this time I completed an advanced modern apprenticeship in railway engineering involving an NVQ L3. I have also achieved the following;

ONC Mechanical Engineering
HNC Electrical / Electronic Engineering
FdSc Electronic Engineering

My most notable qualification being an Electronic Engineering BSc with 1st class honours.

My BSc qualification is however not accredited with the IET.

I currently work as an assistant fleet engineer with the same train operating company where amoungst other things, I oversee various engineering projects.

I am very keen to identify the best route for me to attain Ceng notoriety.

I plan to study part time for an Embedded Systems MSc at Wesminster university. This course is quoted as being accredited as a 'programme of further learning'

Basically, does my BSc hold any value as part of my Ceng progression and will my proposed MSc be of any value?

Absolutely any guidance pertaining to the best route for me to take would be hugely appreciated.

Many thanks,

James

From an IET perspective we are delighted with the resurgence of IEng registrations over the last couple of years. Recent applications for IEng registration are now running at a ten year high.

There were certainly issues around 2006-2008 when the IET (post-merger) deserved criticism, although there were many other factors that contributed to the decline of new IEng registrations from 2002. However it should be noted that the numbers of prospective new Incorporated Engineers seeking registration is now close to level to Chartered Engineer applications at that time. The numbers of new Technicians is also strong. I very much hope that these newer registrants challenge any negativity they may encounter from the very few people who are stuck in outdated one-upmanship. Many Chartered Engineers have transferred from IEng at some stage and a significant proportion of IET Fellows began their careers as apprentices.

There are numerous examples in more recent times of strong public support from the IET for the full range of Professional Engineers and Technicians. Also importantly for the wide range of potential development pathways including apprenticeships. Many schemes include higher level study (up to and including degrees) and many degrees include work experience, leading in both situations to a potential opportunity to demonstrate Technician competence at an early career stage. Subsequent professional practice may provide opportunities for IEng and/or CEng depending on the role and responsibility. I'm not sure if this is what is perceived by some people to be represented by the shorthand "progressive"?

The IET exists in large part to allow Engineers & Technicians to "progress" their careers. This progress may lead to some people choosing to register in more than one of the categories at different times. Personally I have been IEng for 25 years and I frequently meet people who have been Technicians for their whole career. Neither they nor I have "failed to progress", because the engineering profession doesn't need everyone to be Chartered Engineers, it needs strong professionalism across the wide range of different practice.

Longer term the numbers of registrations will be influenced by many factors. Including the economy, social attitudes, marketing and other forms of engagement with existing unregistered practitioners. If we want new entrants to the profession to become registrants, then we need to offer clear and accessible pathways which they will value into the future.

The primary focus should be on professional standards. Although it is certainly a desirable objective to increase the numbers joining the professional community, quantity should never override quality. As far as IET IEng registrations are concerned the resurgence has been led by experienced engineers of a very high standard. It may take a little longer for new pathways and fresh ideas to bring people to IEng slightly earlier in career without reducing that high standard.

Hi to fellow Engineer,

I would like to know if applicant can submit additional/update information for reassessment for Ceng status (in the cases where application took longer then usual).

Background:
At mid-2010, I applied for CEng with IET, and the application was officially accepted by IET on Nov of 2010.

At that time, the IET application form was just updated, and apparently my submission with the new form couldn't provide sufficient information. Therefore I have to resubmitted my application with the old form again.

Back and forth, I was requested to submit additional supporting information for reassessment; the conclusion which I accepted is that I am suitable & eligible to apply for IEng instead of Ceng.

On Dec of 2011, I got notified and my application is proceed to the final stage for Professional Review Interview (PRI);

2013 around the corner... and I am continuing waiting for an IEng interview.

The information in my original application consists of my experience from 2008-2009. Since then I have been updating my experience portfolio with increasing responsibility at work.

Instead of waiting for the IEng interview, would it be possible to resubmit or update my application for an reassessment for Ceng status?

Thanks for reading and any advice will be much appreciated.
