Had a look, couldn't work out how to get at the tubes, was hoping someone on here might know. The control panel/facia runs top to bottom of the car with a full length plastic diffuser either side for the 6ft tubes. I thought they might just prise off but have given them as much force as I dare to no avail. Obviously i'm not a lift engineer, just a sparky but I thought i'd ask before recommending the manager contact a lift engineer.

Thanks in advance. Tom.

Hi,

I need help with this safety critical piece of equipment.

I have two Drexelbrook HHLA's installed on two different tanks on a petrochemical storage facility.

They are being fed from series 401-400 line monitoring receivers (barriers). These receivers are being powered from the excact same power supply.

The problem is that one of the HHLA's has intermittently stopped working. The electrician tested the voltage that is being outputted form the barrier to the HHLA probe and it is 10.22V, which is too low to power the HHLA correctly. When the voltage is this low there is no fault alarm or HHLA LED on the line monitoring receiver which makes it useless. If the electrician turns off the power supply to the line monitoring receiver and then powers up again the voltage increases to 13.32V and stays this way...... which then has everything working correctly, until it intermittently drops again at a later time.

When I replaced the barrier and HHLA with another one from another tank that did work before - it did exactly the same????

Please let me know what can cause this voltage drop......

Hi,

I have just started working for a company installing solar panels. Lets just suffice to say that the previous electrician has left a trail of destruction.

I want to describe exactly what I found today and ask some questions which I hope someone has the answer for!

Firstly, the customer came downstairs to a smoking fuse board. She called and I advised her to isolate her solar installation both d.c and a.c

When I arrived I disconnected the fuse board and discovered that the terminated copper conductor had missed the cage/clamp and must have been loose arcing etc etc.

So first question: Should the fuse have operated?

My understanding is with arcing the current rises thus causing heat and eventually fire. The mcb pictured is the fuse responsible for connecting the inverter to the grid.

As I am sure you will have picked up on, the electrician has also wired a 2.5mm Twin & Earth directly off a 100amp isolator.

Apart from being a potential fire risk this is where my second question is.

With this installation, there were four consumer units. One for sockets, one for lights, one for a shower and one for a garage. The boards were all wired back to Henley blocks.

The customer complained that she was not seeing much savings on her electricity bill despite managing her usage to heavy loads during the day and avoiding heavy use at night.

My question here is concerning metering and the path of the current flow. Is it possible that the customer is not saving as much as she should be? So in the above case only saving on her lighting because thats what the solar array is connected to?

I have always taken separate supplies from the mains via 16/25mm tails. I have never really understood how you can be able to generate and export via the same cable. I understand that a.c flows both ways 50 times per second and that the inverter syncs with the frequency but if someone has some way of explaining this scenario I would sleep better tonight. Just dont understand exactly what is happening here.

Im finding this one difficult to articulate but each CU will draw what it requires from the grid so doesnt this work both ways and the customer will only save on the CU connected with the array.

Can anyone explain that with ohms law or something!!!???

Thanks for your help!

Do all the smoke alarms have to be fed from the same lighting circuit or can the additional one on the second floor be run off the second floor light circuit. The wording of the Building regs says "regularly used lighting circuit" singular. I can't see any particular issues with it and the inter linking would be RF.
I got a NICEIC email a few months back saying they were doing a one day course, along with Click, explaining, and showing, how RF automation works.

£120 inc. VAT, with the 'dangling carrot' of £50 of RF goods free. OK, may be worthwhile, as I know nothing about it, so I booked it, and went yesterday.

It was booked as 9 until 5. Actual time, 9 until 3.30, but could have been finished by 2, and if no dinner, by 1pm.
Presentation was good, with a range of the kit all shown in use, practical uses, how to use it, how to program it.
It is really simple, and nothing to be feared, very simple to install and program. Some good ideas, such as where a 2 gang switch can be used to control 4 appliances, and being RF, does not need any switch wires, so the switch can be put anywhere, or, a small remote can be used to do the same thing.

The kit shown was good, and seems to be good quality. However, when asked how much things cost, the answer was dodged every time.
Of course they didnt want you to know how much it cost, as the price was ridiculous. We didnt find out from the Presenters, we got our phones out and googled, to find a single light (2/4 way) and actuator RF switch would be roughly £130.

The fixed controller for central use was £400+.
Now, for 'normal' use, you'd be laughed off site when quoting such prices, so this kit was only ever going to be for high-end customers, even then, I would find it hard to try to sell such a system, which has one point of failure - the controller, whereas a typical house would have the many services (alarm, heating, lighting etc) all separate.

For some applications, such as adding a new light switch without doing any chasing/decorating, it could be a good thing, albeit a rather expensive one.

Then we get the 'free' goods. This was somewhat of a disappointment. I would have expected a rf switch and actuator (but on seeing their price, maybe not). We got a RF controlled plug-in socket, and a key fob remote to control it. The type of thing that Toolstation sell for £15 for 3. Being as I already have 3 of these, it is of little use.

It was good to see how these things work, but, I really should have read up beforehand to see how simple it was, and not bother paying to be told.
Far too expensive at £120. For £50, it would have been worthwhile, especially as it really could have been shown in 4 hours, and not padded out after dinner.
The kit is good, but too expensive, which they know, as they will not say how much it costs.
Overall, I'd say avoid this day of salemens pitches. If you want to know about it, give them a ring and ask for their brochures, all the stuff is in there.

Alan.

SHaring Neutrals Between Sources

Hi

Im after a bit of feedback regarding interconnected neutrals. Would appreciate some discussion on this.

There is a scheme where a generator and a transformer are connected to a main LV switchboard with three-pole devices, and there is a single neutral-earth link on the main switchboard, load side.

The generator and transformer are not intended to operate in parallel - i.e. they will be a break before make on return to mains.

Also, there is a circuit breaker connected to the generator for connection of a load bank to test the generator. With this scheme it is conceivable that both sources will be energized, supplying different loads and sharing a neutral-earth link on the main switchboard. The neutrals of both sources will be interconnected by virtue of the three-pole devices.

One problem I could envisage in this scenario is that an earth fault in the generator system could circulate to the main switchboard and possibly cause tripping of earth fault protection if present.

Is there any other practical considerations anyone can think of, or is there anything within one of the relevent standards (7671, 7430) that prohibits the neutrals being connected?

Thanks

Many thanks to those who responded to a query I had about this same question regarding ring-maining a group of 16-amp 60309 sockets.

This time I have a set of 2-off 32-amp IEC60309 sockets to be mounted adjacently on an enclosure. the circuits are 1PN+E. The sum of the loads across the pair of sockets will be less than 32A, and I would like to run a radial supply to the pair together from a 32A MCB on 4mm2 cable.
However, I have seen something on the internet that this idea of a radial supply to 60309 style sockets is only allowed for 16A models.

Would I be transgressing BS7671 if I were to implement this format of distribution.?

I cannot see why it would be unreasonable in this case where the protection rating is no more than any individual outlet.

Once again your comments would be most valued.

thank you,
Joey

Does this mean past 1.20m it is outside the zones? if so would you be happy fitting a IPX4 fan heater just past 1.20m, it would be right up high so wouldn't be readily available to touch. 701.512.2 does say IPX4 in zones 1, however the Dimplex IPX4 fan heater does not look sealed enough for zone 1 so have I missed something here?

Also, extraction fan, this will be going much nearer to the fixed water outlet than 1.20m. and due to the ceiling height not putting me outside the zones then it will either have to be a SELV unit or a duct fan, correct? Problem I have is the duct run is 5 meters. It is on the ground floor so locating a high flow duct fan would be difficult. Are there SELV centrifugal fans available that are SELV to cope with the longer duct runs?

All circuits will be 30mA protected.

Any advice would be much appreciated, never installed a wetroom so need a bit of clarification.

Kind Regards,
