Perhaps in some peoples eyes this is a little bit of a 'backwards way of working' however i have looked at job after job in the Oil & Gas industry and there seems to be a lot of opportunity for someone who is 'hands on/ on the tools'

I have been quoting, designing, ordering, programming, testing, commissioning electrical control systems for the past four years now and in this time i have been hands on, (pulling cables, wiring circuits, fault finding, installations work, testing, motors, pumps, control panels, external kit such as various types of switches, etc) I have, however gone through the main route of design and plc programming.

What i would like to know i, would it be worth it/ benefical for me to go back to school and pick up a NVQ level 3 electrical qualification in order to begin work that way for a company in a new industry? I believe there are courses where i can gain this qualification within a year and have been practicing it over the majority of the past four years. If so how would you go about doing so? I am starting my degree top up September 2014 and therefore have a year free to start to look at these courses.

Please help, i am 25 years old and thinking it would be worth doing sooner than later if i should do it or not. I have no idea what i am aiming for as specific role, but i do think i would like to gain entry to Oil & Gas or Mining and Drilling due to the finanical and relocation aspects of the job.

Thank you to anyone who may provide assistance.

Regards

Daniel

Leaving a Graduate job because of bullying

Hi all,

Unfortunately, I am only halfway through my 2 year Graduate training period, but am being forced to consider my options (as are other staff) due to constant harassment and intimidation from a boss which many have described as "bullying".

While I have stuck it for a year, things are at a point where EVERY promise made at interview has been reneged on, career development and CPD has been negligible and aggressive behaviour has made the environment very unpleasant for many involved.

In a nutshell, I am concerned that leaving a Graduate job after less than the 2yrs looks bad on both my CPD and CV. Not only am I low on the career experience ladder (despite a post-grad level education) if I were to come clean and explain reasons for leaving, a prospective employer may also question my resilience (i.e. think I'm a bottler who walks at the first sign of difficulty, when this is NOT the case).

So, does anyone have any advice on how to approach this and make a "clean" exit?

Hello fellow engineers,

This would be my first post at the community forum. Been here for a while just as a guest to look around and understand what where and who. Now lets come to the main thing why I am submitting this new post.

I'm 23 years old recent graduate electrical building services engineer. Have 2.1 hons in BSc Electrical engineering also have CSCS MAP and 17th edition wiring regulation certificate was thinking about inspection and testing but now not yet sure if I need it. I only have 6 months experience at electrical design as I used to for for crane manufacturer and 2 months apprenticeship for building services (nothing much) but lets face it, it certainly isn't enough to have background of regulations and so .

Now it's the 9th month as I'm looking for work and after 3 interviews which needed someone from PLC design and 1 invitation to assessment center of ABB where they were looking for safety system engineer (PLC side) , I'm starting to get more and more disappointed. After I finished reading many of the articles about the graduate position at nowadays market, it makes my hands to completely fall down. Was thinking about MSc degree but after that I though that it's no use anyways as I will ave another diploma and no experience - which will definitely do no good for me.

As I'm not familiar with the UK market as many of you guys are i would like to ask you to tell me what should I do next?

What about work experience? (though going to work for free and try to live somehow just to get that experience I need) Where to get it?

How you get yours if your university doesn't do any of the partnership with major companies or so?

Should I go for MSc? Why?

Hi,

I graduated with an MSC in Satellite and Mobile Communications and am currently looking for employment in the related fields like RF/Telecomms/Wireless systems engineering. But during my search I have observed that these fields require years and years of previous experience and when I send off my CV detailing what I did at University I never get any response.

Therefore, I was wondering if anyone can advice me about how people start off getting a job in these fields i.e. RF design/testing/Telecommunications jobs when they keep asking for experience from applicants? Do they not provide initial training in the job? Why is previous experience required if thats the case?

I know there are graduate schemes but these don't seem like the best chance of getting a job. Are there any ways to gain experience in these fields to start off with? or Getting an entry level position and work your way up?

Thanks,

N

Hi all,

I felt this was the most appropriate forum to post this on, although it also ties in with future registration criteria.

Basically, I am aware that the CEng requirement, academically, is for the Masters, but in reality (and I mean looking at the OVERALL picture, for the next generation of Engineers like myself) will it confer a discernible advantage in the jobs market to have an MEng over a BEng (Hons)?

In my current job, it is of no consequence whatsoever if I choose to upgrade and so at present I am 50/50 over whether I will do it. The title of "CEng" may still be coveted at present, but will that still be the case in the future, as the British economy continues to fail and industry dwindles yet further?

Hello all, I am currently an A level student but next year I'm looking to get into the power industry. I was looking at either going to National Grid on their trainee engineer programme or a similar scheme with my local distribution company (SSE). I was wondering if anyone had any experience of working for either of them and what sort of things I'll be doing?

I'm not the sort to spend all day in an office planning work, I like to be hands on and I'm leaning towards National Gird as I've been told that the engineers at SSE tend to be more office based and deal primarily with customers and faults (which I'm not so keen on!) Can anyone confirm this? I know the National Grid engineers are based at a particular substation but do they actually 'get their hands dirty' or just plan work for fitters? what's their office/subtation balance?

The other thing is I'm quite interested in working offshore on rigs (as my dad used to do this) after getting some experience first, in which case do you think I'd be better getting experience with a distribution rather than transmission company, as they deal with 11kv and 33kv? or could I use the higher voltage (132, 275kv) experience offshore too? My final question! is if I went into transmission and got a 132kv or higher senior authorised person certificate, how easy/hard would be to work for a distribution company or offshore if I wanted to in the future? does a 132kv sap mean you can work on lower voltage equipment?

Any help much appreciated, cheers!

Good night everyone,

I come to you in search of some help and advice. I am an electrical engineer, I finished my degree in Spain over a year ago now and moved over to England with my wife. Since then I have been trying to improve my English and for a couple of months now I have been also looking for a job. I have applied for quite a lot offers now but I'm getting no answers back whatsoever. I have no true work experience but did work with a company for the degree's practicum for ten months, still no UK experience yet.

My questions are:
Will I need to register with a proffesional body in the UK to be able to work as an engineer?

Will I need to convalidate my degree to be able to work here? If so, is it done through Naric or which organization?

Would you please recommend me an effective way to search for a job? Even if it is a simple job like an assistant, I don't mind as long as I can start gaining experience.

And regarding the last question, do you think I could be elegible for an apprenticeship or that is just for newly qualified engineers?

I've got my CV translated to English but I'm afraid it has not been too helpful up til now, any advice on how to do my CV for it to be more attractive?

Any of the information you could give me would be truly appreciated, thank you very much in advance for your help.

David

The world is so complicated, when all the rights and wrongs, goods and bads are tangled together, you find it hard to breadth and believe in what you have always believed .... But in this complicated world there lived as little sparrow , she was not at all concerned with what is gong on around her and in this world. All she cares about was her family, i.e. her husband and a baby boy.
She was least concerned with humans especially because they were so big and scary and always making so much noise. And worst of all their way of thinking was so horrifying and abnormal. So she always preferred visiting deserted places where there was rare chance of encountering any human.
Her life was quite peaceful until one day ... oh yes that horrid day; she so wished that day would not had come .... But "as it was written so it shall be done", it arrived.

As usual she woke up early in the morning, sun has not risen yet, she prayed first, sang the glory of Almighty God, who has created such a beautiful world and put love among he living beings. Then she started making breakfast... as usual of course. Baby boy, woke up an hour later because it's his growing age and he is always hungry. She fed him lovingly and then made her mate wake up so he could leave for his daily search of bread and butter after having breakfast. Mundane, every thing was the same so far and as ever ... when suddenly that moment happened ... the moment that changed everything for them, and brought that misery that no sparrow had ever thought of...
His baby spoke those historical words that no sparrow has ever spoken heard or imagined!
"Mama who am I?
I am going to have an interview on Friday. The role is a graduate power system engineer position and I have already had two interviews previously for presentation and behaviour questions

The coming one is called a graduate level technical interview and I am having a hard time to identify what field I should prepare because there are many things involved in power system. I have actually had quite a few technical questions but the interviews asked different questions just about every time. They asked me about protective relays, symmetrical components, voltage control components, transformers tap changing, different system studies and analysis method. It drives me crazy that I almost prepared the wrong way every time.

I am currently preparing for symmetrical components for different unbalanced fault situation but it is just one topic, there are still tons of topics I can think of like load analysis, transformer etc, each one of them can take me month to prepare. I understand there is really no time for me to read everything but if I can do as much as to read something that is useful for me in the interview, I can make a good impression.

If anyone can provide me some advices or guidance regarding to popular technical interview questions, I would really appreciated it.

hi, i want to design a 3dB coupler (to be specific LANGE coupler) in my thesis work using microstrip, and hence want to compute w/h and s/h for the same. The laminate which i m using has dielectric constant = 2.94. The first step for the above design is to compute even and odd mode impedance, and from these impedance we need t compute w/h and s/h (width and spacing of microstrip lines). I have searched extensively but most of the work is done for material with dielectric constant = 10 (graphs are available for this value). Please help me with this if you can. please if possible suggest me sm1 who can help.

Thanks and Regards,
Sandeep Pariyani

Hi Ive got a 4 year electrical engineering apprenticeship with a national company starting in September.

Is it correct to assume ill be an "electrical engineer technician" because the education in my apprenticeship only requires day release at college while to be an "electrical engineer" requires a degree.

Or would i be working towards a degree level qualification in my apprenticeship. I only ask because ive never come across HNC's and HND's.

Also how does an electrical engineering technician compare to that of an electrician? Both roles require the same amount of time studying, but is there more scope for jobs in one role than the other?

I see on the JIB rates technician is £14 an hour while electrician is £12. As an electrical engineer technician would i be classed under "technician" in the JIB rates?

And if i wanted to become an electrician down the road is it a small step between the two roles or would it require another couple of years studying/working? I already have the 2330 L3, Part P and 17th regs, 2392 level 2 inspection and testing.

many thanks if you can help clear it up in my mind

Edit: Oh and would i be able to register as an engineer at the end of my apprenticeship?

So, 9 months or so after I started work at my first job in electronic design I get to wondering, at what point do young engineers stop being considered as the 'graduate'.

Understand I'm not unhappy with being labelled as a graduate, the company I'm with are offereing excellant support and have allways got people to help me out when I'm stuck (which is often).

Graduate scheme's I assume transition you at the end of them into a full proffesional, but as the only raw graduate in the company there is no 'this is what you have to do to become an engineer', I work on similar jobs to all the other engineers, admittedly simpler ones at the moment.

So the question I suppose is, how long does the transition from graduate to engineer take? Is it something you push through yourself, or is it something achieved via recognition from above?

Hi,

I was looking for some guidance as i feel i am stagnating and not moving forward in my career.

I am currently employed as a multi-skilled maintenance engineer for a pharmaceutical company. I am very keen an eager to pursue this opportunity but i am a little uncertain of the requirements also.

I apologise if this message was long winded but really just wanted to give you a bit of my background and would greatly appreciate any advice to assist me in pursuing my electrical career

Many thanks

James

I help to coordinate a programme to inspire more young people to study, and enter careers in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) called the STEM Ambassadors scheme. We're always looking for new STEM Ambassadors to work with us to inspire the next generation. Our Ambassadors are involved in a wide range of activities including:

Careers talks

Helping with after school clubs

Helping to run challenge days

Organising site visits

Judging competitions

There's no pressure to get involved with activities, and you can pick and choose which fits you best; whether that's timewise, age of the students, types of activity etc. We provide you with full training, a free CRB check and insurance for all your activities. The only minimum requirement is that you get involved in one activity per year, but that can be as simple as a 30 minute careers talk.

If you're interested, more information can be found at: STEM Ambassadors information and to sign up (only takes 5 minutes) Sign up for the programme
