If this is in the wrong forum, I apologize!

When the E&T got its present layout some years ago (I forget when), did anybody actually ASK the readers what they thought of the layout to be adopted?

Of all the magazines I read or browse in a month, say, which typically include the New Scientist, Steam Railways, Practical Classics and Guitarist Magazine, I'm afraid to say that E&T definitely has the worst layout ever!

Take the so-called Page Plan page. Whoever thought that this incomprehensible mismatch of arrows and squares could replace a Contents page?

Take the World News page. Another jumble of squares crammed with text. In fact, I believe one issue a while back had the colours so mismatched (was it black on blue, or vice versa? I don't remember precisely, just my reaction to it!) that apart from the layout, it was totally unreadable.

Take any article of length--in the current issue, my magazine is open at the moment in the Debate section, p26/27. Two pages of three columns each with closely spaced text like a wall of words with no spaces between paragraphs. You've really got to WANT to read the articles to put the effort in to read them.

It's almost as if the magazine is constantly trying to push across too much information in too small a space! Maybe it was always thus. (I don't have any back issues from the seventies so I can't say with certainty.)

Surely I'm not the only IET member who thinks that the E&T magazine has a serious readibility problem? Look at any of the four magazines I mentioned above, or indeed others in a magazine shop's racks, and see how easy it is to read those magazines. Then come back to E&T. If E&T were on sale in the shops, there would be zero sales!

Do we engineers not deserve a decent magazine to read about our chosen profession? Come on, E&T, please adopt a better layout! If you can't design a decent layout yourself, then copy the New Scientist layout. That works for me!

I submitted my American Express credit card details and received an email confirming my payment. Subsequently I received a letter from the company whom the IET entrusted with supplying the magazines, also confirming my order.
Yesterday, 10 December 2012, I received another letter from that company stating that they cannot accept payment by American Express, my order has been cancelled and I shall have to start again.. Now it is too late to order for Christmas, so this is impossible.
Rather than encouraging a child to take an interest in technology, this has demonstrated the failings of the people who use the technology to run their business.
I had expected better from a professional organisation.

As a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, I recently received with the notice of the AGM an booklet "Summary Annual Review 2011 - 12".

In the booklet there were Forwords from the CIPD President and CEO, followed by short articles giving an insight into the spread of CIPD worldwide and how through sharing good practice there is the opportunity to influence business performance, engage with policy makers and news of developing initiatives. The series of short articles is rounded off on how CIPD is continuing to develop and an insight into the people who make up the membership and the Institutes Governance structure. Completing the booklet is a summarised financial statement for the 12 month period covered by this Annual Review.

Reading through the booklet I am able form a favourable impression of what CIPD has achieved and the direction in which the Institute is heading.

While aware that Council makes an report at the IET's AGM, I am not aware of where in the IET similar information is readily available. I leave it to others to comment on whether the management buzzwords (key drivers, value model....) have been used appropriately but was shocked to find not one single mention of "electrical", "electricity", "electronic", "radio" - I could go on - in the entire 16 pages. As a chartered electrical engineer I parted spiritual company with the Institution when we became "IET" and frankly only pay my subs to keep my CEng registration (and that's only vanity), but I'm interested to note that the forums remain predominantly electrical in nature (today 75% of the latest topics are in the wiring, energy or communications categories). My concern is that leadership groupthink is concerned more with challenging the other specialist engineering and science institutions for supremacy than with serving the needs of its core membership and advancing electrical and electronic engineering science and practice. Am I alone in this?

TheIET website currently claims "Discounted software for members". And many years ago, that was true. For example, one could purchase Microsoft Project for £99+VAT when the standard price is £400 (and similar discounts were also available for other packages particularly suited for engineering projects, such as Visio).

However, now the only Microsoft products available are standard office packages, and the discounts are... well, see below.

Microsoft office professional:
Currys price: £ 235 incl. VAT
Citnexus "discounted" price for IET members: £280 incl. VAT

So either the IET is unable to negotiate any discount with Microsoft or Citnexus is taking a very large cut.

Is the IET intending to negotiate better rates with Microsoft or should it remove these from its website?

Separately, if anyone is thinking of purchasing from Citnexus, I recommend they shop around first!

In common with many academics & researchers, I use a bibliographic database (in my case, EndNote) to keep a record of everything I read that is of interest, on account of my not having a brain the size of a planet!

If I read a paper of interest in (say) an IEEE or ACM publication, their website gives me both the ability to download all the citation data (for me to import into my database) and the ability to download a nice crisp PDF of the entire paper, exactly as seen in the magazine, for my future reference. This is free for me (assuming it's a magazine/journal that's included in my membership).

Unfortunately, IET's E&T now doesn't seem to make it to the IEEE Explore system (whereas the old sector-specific magazines, e.g. IEE Communications, did), so I never get that option. You can do this in the IET Digital Library (if you subscribe) after a wait of a month or so, but wouldn't it be nice to have both of these functions (download citation, download PDF) on the E&T website? The horrible print-to-PDF option that we currently have just doesn't cut it - it could be much more professional for a learned institution!

Russ.

Why is it that I am barred from an IET prize for engineering achievement, purely because of my Y chromosome?

I find this offensive, sexist and discriminatory.

I asked three female colleagues what they thought of this award recently, and before I could even explain why I had asked their opinion, they condemned it as discriminatory and asked where the Young Male Engineer of the Year award was.

I believe that this prize (worth £1000 plus a great deal of publicity) has no place in an institution that prides itself on its inclusivity and diversity. We should not be sending a message that women need special help or assistance to enter engineering or stay in the industry. We should be sending the message that all people are welcome in the industry, as long as they can do the job. There's no reason why women should be any less capable than men, as long as they have the right skills and knowledge, so gender isn't an issue.

Would it be OK to have a Young Black Engineer of the Year award? How about a Young Transgender Engineer of the Year? Young Deaf Engineer of the Year? How far should we patronise those who are in some kind of minority before people realise it's ridiculous?

Engineers are supposed to be known for their common sense and pragmatism. We shouldn't care who our people are as long as they deliver the goods - and our recognition of excellence in the profession should reflect our open nature.

I call for this award to be abolished.

Hello Friends,

On line voting is highly commendable but making it a little easier would surely win greater take up. I would think a large proportion of users would attempt to access the site via a search engine such as Google only to find like me that it won't work. This of course triggers a bit of investigation for the engineering mind. A trawl through the IET site yields the answer kindly supplied in 2011, where the same frustration must have been apparent. The security treatment of the URL, which many will recognise, means you have to enter the address properly in the top Address Bar. Again very commendable, but a trap for the uwary retiree and a potential waste of energy on a grand scale. Can we have a little more than 'Go to:' next time please?

First, it is dull black and white with no images or anything to liven it up.

Mainly, although it has six headings, each with its own "read more" button which in most other emails or websites leads you to more information on that topic, in this case each button takes you to the same web page, which is the same list of headings with none of the text left out. And it gives you the option of downloading the same again in pdf or word format! How exciting is that?

The IET should read Jakob Neilsen's columns of web usability, at www.useit.com - he has a lot of guidelines, and too many examples of bad web design.
I would imagine that there is an official line on this, however I can't seem to find any detail of it.

I am currently preparing a paper for an IET conference and would like to know what style the references should be presented in.

The only relevant advice I have found on this is here. This suggests the "Vancouver" system, but this does not tie up with the one example in the template. (no "and" between author names, bold and italic used, etc).

What do other people use/prefer and is there some official guidance I should be following?

Thanks,
John

Inspired by the November edition of Information Matters and Keith's pitch that the revised website which has (finally!) arrived will be "much more intuitive and user-friendly", I've had a poke about on it today: I wish I hadn't now!

Has anyone else had problems such as this: (screen grab) where, despite being logged in, it asks you to log in again (and no, there wasn't a long pause where a time-out could've fired off).

Also, missed opportunity: when I'm logged in, why does the Events mini-column still show me events from London and around the world? Why not tailor it to events near me, and/or specific to my interests?

And why can't I configure the page (cf. iGoogle) to include mini-columns that I'm actually interested in or, at the very least, move them to the top?!

Aesthetic/familiarity moans aside (e.g. I can't find stuff now! I can't find my local LN! Where have the TPNs gone?!), I can't see what took three months or whatever it was to roll out, I'm afraid. Maybe my expectations had drifted too high... no doubt boosted by the arrival of my hefty annual subscription bill (at the risk of drifting off-topic slightly there...).

Russ.
