I'm preparing a paper on heating systems which work automatically, the basic idea being that a switch is required to turn the heating on when the temperature falls below a set value.
List temperature-dependent changes in materials properties (one each from gradual, accelerating and sudden) that could be exploited in a 'cold' sensor that could be used to turn the heating system on and off. Taking it a step further could these be used in 0 degrees C? Thanks... |

You appear to describing the function of a frost 'stat.
Are you looking at something more sophisticated ? Network Rail use a device which not only detects near 0 deg.C temperatures but also inclement weather - when it snows but air temperature is well above freezing. |
