PS3 definitely had ARG with the digipet game.
I am pretty sure the PS2 EyeToy had similar capabilities. |

AR isn't an entirely new concept but what you have with the Vita is a 3D animated figure, as opposed to a 3D viewed one, inserted within a dynamically changing 2D environment as you move around the camera on the portable.
Going beyond that, what Tsuruta-San previewed at IEDM was 3D inserts in a 3D environment, again dynamically changing as in future viewed through 3D glasses. That really does push the idea further still. |
