Does Ubuntu installation disk automatically support printers and simialr hard wares. Is it true that usually one has to download from Internet, softwares for all attached hardwares? If true, then Linux installation become quite cumbursome and unattractive.

Vista is one of microsoft's worst OS.
A simple way to put things...Vista eats RAM.My sister's laptop has 1gb Vista and it moves slow. My previous pc had 512mb with xp and moved much faster. However I bought a new system 6gb ram with vista but i will downgrade to xp.

Most major Linux distributions such as Ubuntu, SuSE, Fedora, Mepis,
etc., etc., come bundled with all the available drivers for all the
hardware that has been found to be Linux compatible (because sadly not
all hardware is).

There are occasions where you may need to search for drivers or to do
some configuration such as to make some of the more obscure wireless
adapters work but there is a lot of help available for those times.

You may also have to do some downloading to set up the so-called
Restricted Formats (features that may have legal issues in some
countries because of the licensing of certain technologies: have a
search for Ubuntu Restricted Formats).

However, again the help on this is very good and in practice setting
up is quite trivial. It is often easier than installing all the
software and drivers that you would have to do as part of any Windows
installation anyway. Don't forget that Linux distributions come
bundled with all the software, not just the bare OS and drivers.

The hardware recognition and configuration of Linux distributions is
very impressive these days but there will always be new devices as
well as some older ones that are not Linux compatible because the
manufacturers are only interested in targeting the Windows user and/or
do not want to disclose their proprietary interfaces and drivers.

Rule One: check for hardware compatibility before you buy it. :-)

BTW: is it time to start a new thread for this discussion since it is
no longer directly to do with Windows?

yes it is true, in spite of the fact that Vista is more advance when it comes to security and the Interface, I still prefer having XP on my Unit.

I've reccently upgraded to a new laptop with a higher spec processor, more memory etc and it came with Vista. I am running the same applications and have done all the housekeeping but the machine is definitely slower.
I recently got an update to my Adobe reader and found that any pdf's I put on the desktop now show up as thumbnails each creating a 1Mb file. Does anyone know how I can get the old Adobe icon back?

Now windows 7 is available i hope everybody has a sigh of relief and they can now get rid of that windows vista.Windows 7 is very much user friendly and does not prove heavy on the laptop as in the case of vista.

I actually just upgraded my Vista machine to 7 and I notice significant lag with 3GB of internal RAM. I am wondering if the upgrade process left a bunch of junk in my registry and maybe I should back up my files and do a format/reinstall?

Clean install every time. I remember asking for tips on Windows 7 install from my colleagues on an IT mailing list and they all recommended clean installs. Before you do a clean install, download the latest Windows 7 drivers for your hardware.

It may also be worth a Google to find out if there is a specific issue that causes performance issues on your model of computer. The answer may already be out there.

I Love my Vista... But you must got a big RAM to use it effectively. just for running the os Vista use up 1G RAM .. so having a big RAM is a must. Just my 2cent ..

Your machines sound slow, you people need to have powerful hardware if you want performance.
Mine is
500 GB HDD
6 GB RAM
2.6 GHz clock speed
AMD A8 Quadcore processor


Still if you want performance from normal hardware then either install Windows 8 or have a Mac machine.
