Yes good to see a lot of old friends and some new ones. Lots of members of this forum present.
I hear the industry forum on I&T and the importance of certification was not well received? I heard in the car on the way home that there were a few questions to the panel from some residents from the shallow end of the gene pool demonstrating their lack of competence which provided clear examples of the topic of the presentation. I got a few nice freebies and splashed out on some VDE hex drivers from Boddingtons. ------------------------- John Peckham http://www.astutetechnicalservices.co.uk/ |

John, It was great to meet you & GB.
PeteTLM introduced himself, though that was the only 3 I met! BTW did you go to see the NIC SW in the end? |

I am told by my colleagues who sat in the audience in the industry forum presentation on the topic of the Emma Shaw fatal accident when asked about what qualifications persons sent out to I&T a new installation by a QS needed the experts from the NICEIC, ELECSA and NAPIT played pass the parcel and dodged the question with all the skill of a North Korean negotiator.

Yes, they did give a hairy fairy 'club' view in response. They didnt know what time frame the install was, and couldnt decide if it was 16th or 17th.

Emma Shaw was not accidentally killed, she was unlawfully killed by an NICEIC contractor sending an unskilled, unqualified, unsupervised person to Test and Inspect.
My favourite bit was the complaint from someone that was in competition with three NICEIC contractors who insisted that it was OK to quick change a board and just put the circuits with faults, onto the non RCD side of a board. Apparently the, "No worse than when you arrived" clause could be applied. It is unfair that the NICEIC gets more stick than the other Schemes through just because they are larger. |

To be fair he was looking for some sort of confirmation as to the best way to proceed, and he didnt get a definitive answer did he.
Unfortunately, the 3 panel members repeating the same rubbish wasted a lot of time when the question was asked multiple times by the same person. Wiring aside, the fact the whole environment was soaked with water didnt help the Lady in question. ------------------------- ---------------------------------------- Lack of planning on your part doesn't make it an emergency on mine.... Passion and morals? The desire to know more? The urge to get it right? The ability to say 'I don't know but I'll find out about that and come back to you'? (those latter the wisest words from my Dad about 30 years ago in a curry house on Hampstead Heath, still remembered) Caring? I'm watching a friend who has probably just passed his 2391 exhibit a lack of all of the above at the moment so right now I doubt that any paper badge is sufficient. Your task as a teacher JP, is beyond teaching past paper questions. I've a notion that you are rather good at it, but a tough call for you in an industry that cares more and more about pieces of paper. In passing, what do you do then, when changing a board and the new RCD won't hold and it is getting late? If essential, I put the offender on a non RCD breaker which I leave space for on old board changes, for the night, and go back the next day. I use the 'no less safe' phrase out loud to my clients. We, on here, always sort our RCD issues in the end but the time, caring etc. as above come into play on how we sort them. Zs |
